1969 Bonneville T120r Restoration

Lots of progress lately. I have everything cleaned up and off to the powdercoater. The frame took forever as the combination of oil and dirt for the past 40 years became like tar. After a healthy amount of degreaser and several rolls of rags it was clean enough to bring for painting.

I had to buy a slide hammer type puller to get the wheel bearings out. My typical methods proved futile on the old brit, but the slide hammer worked a treat.

Some small progress on a few sub assemblies. I got the fork internals rebuilt along with the coil assemblies. Not sure if the originals were OK, but with vintage british electrics why bother risking it.

Next up will be breaking down the front wheel and getting all the chrome bits to the plater. The rear is already broken down as I had to separate the hub to get it powder coated.

Triumph T120r Bonneville Restoration

The bonnie is almost totally broken down after this weekend. This is the dirtiest bike I've ever worked on. Decades of leaking oil have coated everything aft of the motor in a thick layer of oil/dirt/sand paste. A lot of the parts warranted cutting the sludge off with a razor blade, as it was so stuck on.

I've got the majority  of black components ready for powder coating. I just need to break the fork down and clean up some of the remaining sludge on the frame and swing arm.

Triumph T120r Bonneville Restoration

It was a lot of work getting these carbs back to new condition. Well worth the effort though. Overall they were in good shape inside without as much corrosion as I'd expected.

Bugger. Found the oil tank mount tab has broken around it's weld. I'll need to fix this.

Triumph T120r Restoration

It's in the process of being torn down. I'm going to try and salvage these petcocks, but I don't hold much hope for them sealing well. I'd like to avoid using reproduction parts wherever possible.

1969 Triumph T120r Restoration

Here's the start of the 1969 Bonneville project. Going for a full restoration on this one, as it's too classic and beautiful to do any sort of chopping and modding to. It's relatively complete but in pretty sorry shape and has been sitting for 30 years. The plan is to break it down, send all the black chassis bits out for powder coat, chrome bits out for new plating, the tank and fenders out for a proper respray. I'll put the rolling chassis back together and then tear into the motor.

I've taken a long break from this blog. A few new bikes in the stable. YZ450 SuperSingle that I want to make it to pikes peak on, GSXR1000 street bike, and I just picked up a 1969 Bonneville for a winter project. Time to start updating this thing again.
